October 2011 was almost as bad as October 2008 (when I was admitted to Beth Israel Hospital on bed rest with Camryn). Ethan had more doctor visits this month than in all the previous months of his life combined; three with his primaries, Drs. Gupta and Mahoney, two with allergists Dr. Bingham and Dr. Baxi, one each with pulmonologist Dr. Karash and ENT Dr. Whittmore, two trips to the ER, a visit to GI specialist Dr. Rafaelle, and even an appointment with genetics/metabolism expert Dr. James. And let's not forget the dentist!
Chest x-rays, countless blood draws, hours of waiting... Though Ethan hasn't been feeling well, he's been very, very brave. I, on the other hand, have been a wreck. After his first-ever stomach virus, Ethan had a lip/face swelling episode that scared us half to death. For a week we lived with a POSSIBLE diagnosis of HAE (hereditary angioedema). Very unpleasant. Thank goodness the test results were negative and he doesn't have it!!! I was sure he did, of course, while H was sure he didn't. The week of waiting was excruciating, but what a relief when it was over.
Times like these, while horrifying, remind us that nothing matters as much as good health, and we shouldn't waste a moment sweating the small stuff.

Marriage?!
For weeks, Ethan and I have been talking about marriage. It started, I think, just after Lika's wedding, which apparently made a much stronger impression on him than we thought at the time. The initial conversation was about Margot, Ethan's first love. One afternoon, after his daily visit to her house, he announced that he was going to marry her. Now that I let him cross the street by himself, he's there more and more often, and he's deeper and deeper in love. I had to crush poor Ethan by explaining that not only is Margot too old for him, but that she is already married with three (almost) grown children. He said that he would be willing to marry her anyway, but when I told him that it was against the law, that all the married people we knew were married only to each other, he seemed to understand. And while he was definitely sad and disappointed, he was also, I think, somewhat relieved. Feelings so intense can be overwhelming, and now that he gets the limits, he can enjoy Margot's company with a little less angst.
Here are the kids mauling Margot who came out with a box of Swedish Fish.
When school began, Ethan started spending a lot more time with sisters Jane and Allison, our friends who live around the corner. Allison (wavy hair) is in Ethan's kindergarten class and Jane (straight hair) is in the class down the hall. Both are on his soccer team and both play regularly after school in our booming neighborhood crew.
Here they are with Ava (pink bow).
As we were driving home from school last week--and I was, as usual, pulling teeth to get some tidbit of information about his day at school--Ethan asked: "How should I choose who(m) to marry?" I was confused by the question, but after a little prodding I learned that he was really asking, "How do I choose between Jane and Allison, when I want to marry them both?" I was stumped. Really stumped. Even God I can talk about, but this was tricky. At least he remembered he couldn't marry them both! I didn't want to belittle his feelings or discuss either girl, both of whom I like so much, and while of course no one is actually getting married, I tried to take the question as seriously as Ethan was taking it. I asked him if he had proposed to either girl, or whether either girl had proposed to him, and when he didn't seem to know for sure, the discussion kind of fizzled out... Only to return a few days later when Ethan proudly and definitively announced that he was going to marry JANE. When I asked him how he came to that decision, he explained that Allison wanted to marry the girl who sits next to her at lunch, and so obviously Jane was going to be the lucky one. It's nice when you don't have to keep struggling with a decision. I told Ethan that I was thrilled for him, but that he would have to ask Jane's parents for her hand.
So he did.
I remember the good old days when Ethan used to say that he was going to marry me!

Rosh Hashanah
This morning, before services, I overheard this conversation:
E: "Ok, breakfast and then it's time to go and talk to God!"
C: "But I'm too shy of him!"
E: "Don't worry Cami, he's way way up in the sky!"

Touch a Truck
Despite the hot and humid day, the blazing sun, and the deafening horns and alarms, we had a great time at Truck Day. The kids got to climb behind the wheel of a big rig, touch the scoop of a digger and see the inside of an ambulance, fire truck, school bus, police car and more! Cami, who was pretty whiny today, still loved walking up and down a moving truck ramp; and Ethan, well he was just beside himself, running madly from truck to truck, some part of him definitely believing that it was all real. And while I couldn't have been happier when 1pm finally came around and trucks started to go, some part of me, (albeit not a big part), definitely wished Ethan could have just a few more minutes.
Soccer
Ethan has been playing soccer this fall. He's not terribly excited by it, nor does he show any particular talent (I'm being very kind), but he likes the cleats and the girls, and he sure does look cute in the outfit!

Kindergarten
After some serious resistance at home, hiding under the seat in the car, and even a few tears, Ethan finally made it into his kindergarten classroom, Ms. Doyle's room 111. Luckily, most of the drama is just for our benefit, so as soon as he saw a familiar face (Ava's) and an interesting activity (a train floor puzzle), he was off. After the parent's coffee in the cafeteria (which is still serving the same exact nutritionally void menu it did when I was in school), I had a peek into the classroom and saw a happy and engaged Ethan. I walked the ten minutes with Coco to pick him up a few hours later (which was a huge improvement to our hour long commute of last year), and was greeted by a boy with a huge grin. He tried to tell me he had a terrible day, but I can tell he loved it.
Here is his forced photo shoot:

Camryn's First Day of School!
Camryn went to school today. Parents got to stay and watch. I am mixed emotionally. Very mixed. Don't even want to say more than that at the moment. I think I must be in shock. She seemed to really like it, but I'm not sure that I'll be able to leave her tomorrow.
